Bernie Madoff has just been sentenced for 150 years, the maximum allowed. I have just spent a morning to reading about Madoff, and in particular his personality, in various articles. I recently read a terrific article about professional poker players in The New Yorker called What would Jesus bet? The article features Chris Ferguson, widely regarded by his peers as the best professional poker play in the world and who is nicknamed "Jesus" because of his physical appearance. Yesterday I received a link to this interesting article by Hannah Norton “How to spot an office psychopath”. The article argued that there are certain personalities who deliberately inflict harm to others and that these personalities fall within a category that psychologists call the ‘Dark Triad’ which comprises three sub-personalities: Machiavellianism, sub-clinical narcissism and sub-clinical psychopathy. What really piqued my interest in the corporate psychopath was a seminar I attended last year run by Dr John Clarke, a lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sydney, consultant to the NSW Police Force, and widely regarded as Australia's expert on corporate psychopaths. I can highly recommend his book Working with Monsters: How to Identify and Protect Yourself from the Workplace Psychopath.
