I must confess it is only recently that I heard of this phrase. Emotional labour was first defined by the noted sociologist Arlie Hochschild in her book, The Managed Heart: The Commercialization of Human Feeling, as “the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display.” It’s essentially putting on an act to affect the emotional state of others in a way that meets the expectations of an employer. Robert Cialdini’s 1984 book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion has sold over three million copies and has been translated into thirty languages. The book brought science to the art of persuasion, and set out the famed Six Principles of Influence: social proof, reciprocation, authority, liking, scarcity and consistency. I was recently sent an interesting TED talk by Dr. Helen Riess, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, titled The Power of Empathy. One of the interesting parts of the talk is how she forms a mnemonic out of “empathy” to describe performance enhancing techniques for improving one’s empathy. E stands for Eye Gaze: Forming eye contact is critical first step in developing empathy. Dr. Reiss does not mention it but a very good tip for developing empathy is look at someon.....
