Podcast Review Winning The Unforgiving Race to Greatness Tim Grover
I often define the 7MTF model of temperament as the Five Factor Model + the Corporate Psychopath + the Corporate Bully. The Corporate Bully is someone with a dominant Politician component and weak Regulator. People with a dominant Politician are motivated by a desire to win every competition they are in. Then just recently one of my coaching clients sent me the link to the following podcast.
https://hiddenforces.io/podcasts/tim-grover-winning/
I had never heard of Tim Grover. He is the CEO of Attack Athletics, Inc., founded in 1989. The introduction contained the usual hyperbole. World-renowned for his work with Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and hundreds other sports and business professionals, he is the preeminent authority on the science and art of physical and mental dominance. He is the author of the national bestseller Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable and creator of the digital training platform The Relentless System. Most recently, he penned Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness. Tim Grover’s Politician component is through the roof.
Tim is a dynamic interviewee and is a great storyteller. And with clients like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant you have to be interested. And Tim has some great zingers.
“F**k ‘try’. Trying is an open invitation to failure, just another way of saying, ‘If I fail, it’s not my fault, I tried…’ You don’t try your best; You do your best.”
“Most people who claim to have killer instinct rarely do, because when you have that kind of power, you don’t talk about it. You don’t think about it. You just use it.”
“Winning is not a marathon, it’s a sprint, with no finish line. There is no balance. In order to win anything, you have to live your life with urgency, at every moment, because winning wants all of you— there’s never enough time, so why waste any of it?”
Probably the advice that really resonated with me was the focus on detail but willingness to try something different. He gave the wonderful example of arm curls. Up till now I always did them with equal weights in each hand. Instead, you should have a heavier weight in your weaker hand in order to build up its strength.
While I agree that having a plan and working hard is important, I do believe to be a winner you do need to have a very strong Politician component in your temperament. My earlier blog about Michal Jordan says it all: Emotional Intelligence and The Last Dance
Finally I have to include this Amazon review of Tim’s latest book:
“To save your time, read this paragraph instead of the entire book.
Winning is tough. Winning doesn’t care about feelings. It’s ugly, nasty, tough, hard. MJ and Kobe had this figured out. Winning is tough. Winning doesn’t care about your feelings. Winning does not care. MJ and Kobe knew how to live this out. Winning sucks. It’s hard to do. MJ and Kobe knew this. Winning is hard. MJ and Kobe liked it. Winning is difficult to do. MJ and Kobe knew how to do it. And in closing, winning is a struggle.”
Sums up someone with high P temperament component beautifully.
If you want to improve your recognition and social skills for Politicians and the other six 7MTF components consider doing my practical emotional intelligence courses. Do the basic 7MTF course for an investment of A$25 and 5 hours of your time and you will dramatically increase your EQ competency in days.
